Abigail turns three!
By jason, March 16, 2009 on 11:46 pm | In family | 2 CommentsWe schlepped all three kids (I still do a double take sometimes when I realize we have three kids) to Abigail’s birthday party Sunday and had a nice time as we always do at Calvin and Deeann’s events. They are always on top of food, entertainment, party favors, and lucky for us, we even won a Target gift card with a raffle ticket!
Of course, I didn’t get away scot free as I donated my photography “skills” to capture some of the moments during the day. I figure the images are worth about 2 or 3 of the yummy fresh spring rolls I wolfed down.
It’s nice to have a NICU nurse in the family:

The scary clown that Alissa wasn’t sure about:

It was all good after he gave her a balloon though:

Daddy entertained by clown, Abigail, not as much:

Abigail is all about the Wiggles:

Alissa chased Megan around in circles for quite a while:

The best part about family parties… lots of volunteers to hold babies:

as always, thanks for all the professional pictures for the price of three spring rolls! now when are you coming over to fix our internet? (i can pay in free babysitting)
btw- i am sure there is a term for it in the photography world, but how do you focus on the object in the foreground and fade out the stuff in the back??? i have fancy new camera but pics are still lousy!

The term is shallow depth of field. And if you have pleasing out of focus areas, your lens is demmed to have good “bokeh.” It’s determined by a number of factors, but most obvious is the aperture of the lens (how big the hole is that light comes through) when you take the picture. I believe you have the 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 lens or something like that. 18-55 is the focal length range you have at your disposal. Bigger numbers = more zoom. f3.5-5.6 is the maximum aperture range. In this example, the maximum aperture at 18mm focal length is 3.5. The maximum aperture at 55mm focal length is 5.6. So your maximum aperture goes down as you zoom in. (Aperture goes down as the number goes up.)
Anyway, I’ve probably lost you by now, but I can give you a quick hands on tutorial next time. It’s pretty straight forward.
